I read this book with no memory of the synopsis whatsoever so I really had no clue what I was in for.

For starters, I need to say what stood out to me the most, which is that the characters could’ve been better developed. I feel like that was the main thing that affected this book and if they had been more dimensional and developed, it would have made a huge difference for every single other aspect of the story.

The dialogue, in general, could’ve been better too and if it had been, that might’ve helped the characters as well. Maybe if I had read the first two books of the series I would’ve connected better with them, I don’t know. But as a standalone, this story really failed to deliver dimensional and developed characters, and that’s it.

Now, one thing I absolutely adored in this book was the animals and the animal-lover side of the characters. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that as present in any other book as in this one and I truly enjoyed that aspect of it. The pets had so much personality and background (just as much or even more than the characters themselves, sadly) and I absolutely fell for all of them. I loved reading their stories and seeing how these people cared and helped the animals. I can also praise the theme of family in the story. How important family is for every one of the characters and how supportive they really are of each other. I truly liked the main plot of Mitch finding his brothers and connecting with them, for sure. These things were probably what helped me connect with the characters the most.

The love story was nothing memorable for me but I can definitely say I enjoyed reading it. It felt too much like insta-love, which weirdly, doesn’t usually bother me much, but in this case, it just contributed to me not connecting enough with the characters and as a result, not being invested enough in their relationship.

There was an added side of mystery and suspense on the book, which was what kept me going and kept me excited to reach the end while reading but I have to say the outcome of that wasn’t near as good or as big as I wanted it to be. It had too much built up yet at the actual, decisive moment, nothing really big happened. I felt absolutely none of the fear and suspense that had been building up throughout the book and it was over as soon as it started.

In general, I think there are better stories out there with the suspense and romance this book attempted to portray.  However, I enjoyed it and if it sounds like something you might like and want to give it a try, I definitely say go for it!
