We don’t get a lot of NBA superstars coming through little ol’ Pine Hill, Texas. That’s why everyone is all in a tizzy over the fact that the USA men’s Olympic basketball team will be training here of all places before this year’s Summer Games. With little else to talk about, rumors about the players have been spreading like wildfire, and there’s one man in the middle of it all holding a match.
Ben Castillo.
NBA champion.
Olympic gold medalist.
Widely hailed ‘King of the Court’.The morning he walks into my dingy diner, I have enough sense to keep my head down and go right on wiping tables, pouring coffee, and serving up short stacks. A man who looks like that—superstar or not—has only ever meant trouble, and more trouble is the last thing I need, what with taking care of Nan and scraping by on tips from truckers.
If anything, he seems drawn to my indifference. His steely gaze pierces me behind the counter. My knees nearly buckle under the weight of his attention. But while Mr. Pretty Boy is probably used to snagging city girls with a smile, this gal is country strong.
I won’t be some clichéd convenience for him on his way through town.
So look over your choices carefully, Benny-boy. We serve up sides of hash browns here, not heartbreak.
I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
One thing you should know about me is that I’m a HUGE R.S. Grey fan. Her books always put me in a better mood. To say my excitement for this book was extreme would be putting it lightly.
In this book we meet Raelynn, a young woman who is really down on her luck. She is working two jobs in a town she was hoping to escape, barely making ends meet while also trying to pay for her grandma’s long-term care facility. Raelynn really has it rough in life. She deals with a boss who harasses her, deals with barely making any tips, and having to think about her dreams drifting away as the days go on. I really connected with Raelynn. She has a very realistic viewpoint on life and many of the things she goes through are things normal people in the real-world experience. Even though she is struggling, she always tries her hardest and tries to be kind to people.
Ben Castillo is our hero in this book. He is a famous NBA champion who is training to go to the Olympics. His personality was very appealing to me. He has this grumpy, sometimes shy, sometimes rude, sometimes sweet kind of thing going on. Basically, he was speaking my love language. He is also dealing with some personal issues that have made him untrustworthy of the world around him. I loved his character so much.
Reading about Raelynn and Ben was everything I could’ve hoped for. They start as enemies and you see the gradual build up in their relationship. Their relationship isn’t easy, and you’ll read about what they have to do to get their happily ever after. This book was cute and a quick read for me and really helped me out of my book funk. I highly recommend it!
Hello! My name is Brittany. I’m a newbie nurse by day and an avid reader 24/7. I am a proud romance junkie and will read just about every genre as long as there is some romance. I love to spend my time with my 9 cats—yes, you read that correctly—and posting on my bookstagram account (@_darkreadings if curious). I’m also a hardcore JLA fan.
