Prey is the second book in Hannah’s Blackwater Pack Series, and once again, she managed to enthrall me completely. I read this book chapter by chapter as Hannah was writing it, and it was the sweetest kind of torture you can imagine. Reading Hannah’s books is like falling down the rabbit hole. And you absolutely cannot return to the real world until you’ve successfully slain the Jabberwocky, aka finished the damn book. So put your hair in a bun, get some coffee and let’s go. It will blow your freaking mind!

Prey picks off right after Sanctum and Broken’s events, so if you have not read those two – abort mission. This review contains spoilers for the first book and Rhodes and Larkin’s novella. After some well-deserved downtime in Blackwater, the gang returns to school, hoping for a less eventful semester than the last one. But the peace and quiet doesn’t last long. The disappearance of several girls from the school sends the entire shifter community into uproar. In Sanctum, Hannah set the stage for the showdown with this mysterious threat, and now we’re in what seems to be the first act of a much bigger fight.

In addition, the impending Spring Summit forces Skye back into the past. If she wants Long Mesa to pay for what they did to her and her mother and every other omega in that godforsaken house, putting all her cards on the table is the only choice she has. Skye has grown immensely as a character since we met her. The fierce fire that she used to hide away is now burning as brightly as ever. Her determination not to bow to her traumatic past and to fight for a future with her mate is nothing short of fucking amazing. I simply adore her character. Her relationship with Remy continues to evolve and develop as they settle into their bond. What makes their relationship so special and real to me is that they absolutely run into one or the other roadblock along the way; they make mistakes and fight and argue, but at the end of the day it’s the two of them against the world. Remy, of course, is amazing. He’s there for Skye every step of the way, shining like a lighthouse from the sea. From tears, heartbreak, passion, and anger to steamy encounters in showers that will make your head spin – this book has it all. 

Hannah takes the time to walk us further through this world she’s building. We get to experience the shifter world beyond Long Mesa and Blackwater as Hannah introduces both new and old characters (that we all wish were dead) into the story. The plot is well-paced and laced with humor, action, angst, betrayal, and twist and turns around every corner. Her unmatched ability to create unique and detailed backstories for her secondary characters completes the package. In other words, it’s utter perfection, and you’d be an idiot not give it a shot. I absolutely cannot wait for the third and final book in this series. If paranormal / shifter books are your thing, this one’s right up your alley.
