Everything casts a shadow. Even the world we live in. And as with every shadow, there is a place where it must touch. A seam, where the shadow meets its source.
Olivia Prior has grown up in Merilance School for girls, and all she has of her past is her mother’s journal—which seems to unravel into madness. Then, a letter invites Olivia to come home—to Gallant. Yet when Olivia arrives, no one is expecting her. But Olivia is not about to leave the first place that feels like home, it doesn’t matter if her cousin Matthew is hostile or if she sees half-formed ghouls haunting the hallways.
Olivia knows that Gallant is hiding secrets, and she is determined to uncover them. When she crosses a ruined wall at just the right moment, Olivia finds herself in a place that is Gallant—but not. The manor is crumbling, the ghouls are solid, and a mysterious figure rules over all. Now Olivia sees what has unraveled generations of her family, and where her father may have come from.
Olivia has always wanted to belong somewhere, but will she take her place as a Prior, protecting our world against the Master of the House? Or will she take her place beside him?
I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Eerie And Utterly Devourable Read!
When I first saw this book pitched as Crimson Peak meets The Secret Garden I really had no idea what to expect as I never really envisioned those two things intersecting. But Schwab really found a way to weave these two very different concepts into something both captivating and horrific.
As usual, her language is that of a master, making you feel as though you are right there next to Olivia as she begins to discover the secrets of her mother’s journal and the manor she calls home. The hauntingly vivid picture painted as you stumble through Gallant is one of both love and loneliness, desire and need.
Gallant is a book that can be devoured in one sitting and reread like a haunted faerie tale millions of times over, discovering something different with each new glimpse of the page. But one final thing we mustn’t forget… This book has pictures, and oh my are they breathtaking!
If you’re in the mood for a rich, enthralling read I’d definitely say to pick up Gallant by V. E. Schwab. It’s more delectable than German Chocolate cake.
Hi there!
I’m Diane, I suffer from wanderlust and am from Toronto, Ontario.
Since I was a wee bairn I was obsessed with reading and the fantastical worlds books would sweep my away in. Flash forward 28 years, I can now be seen running through the trees in hopes of being carried to a world far far away, but mostly just tripping over tree roots.
When I’m not reading or watching What We Do In The Shadows on repeat, I can be found tracing my lineage to the ancient Vikings and Scots. Oh! And making organic dog treats for my high-maintenance pets.
