My reputation at Fairview University preceded me. I was the projected number-one pick in the NHL draft and the fan favorite at the rink. People wanted to be me or be with me.
Except for Lyla James Marichal.
She didn't look at me like I was her next meal. She eyed me with disdain. Instead of vying for my attention, she ignored me and pushed me away.
She was completely unattainable, and I became obsessed with her.
When I finally got her, it felt like I was on top of the world. I was going to help the team win another championship, going into the draft, and had Lyla by my side.
And then, without warning, she left me.
Vanished.
It took me three bitter, angry, long years to find her, but I did, and now she owes me a lot more than just an explanation.
Three years ago, she ruined my life. Now, I was going to become her worst nightmare.
I received this book for free from Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
You will find that in previous reviews I have of Claire Contreras books that I go on and on in the beginning about how great she is, how much I adore her and her writing. Like, she is also super pretty and so talented and kind…. and eventually someone is going to get sick of me going on and on, but until then I’m going to keep doing it! Yet again Claire has knocked it out of the park with this novel (I was going to make a hockey pun here, but I don’t have the equivalent lol).
Lachlan and Lyla are our MC’s. Lachlan starts out as your typical college hockey player – hot, full of himself, gets any girl he wants, adored by everyone, and is headed for bigger and better things. Lyla is a soccer player who stepped back from her career, she is reserved, and struggling to live her life the way she should due to her past. She is living in fear and hiding everyday. But when these two finally come together it changes them both.
Sounds like the perfect set up for a romance right? Not so fast! Things take a dark turn and upend everything we hoped for. Hearts are broken, lives are thrown in different directions, and years pass…. until revenge finally rears its head.
Lyla spent far too much time not facing her demons, and thanks to Lachlan, time is up.
I love the dark, obsessed, angry, revenge seeking version of Lachlan. It is so. freaking. hot. Honestly one of my least favorite things about this book is that we didn’t get to see more of that side of him. It felt so short lived, especially considering how angry he was. I wanted to see that rage in him a bit longer. It gave a whole different tone to the book that I was absorbed by. I could have drowned in his darkness, willingly. But I also adore the in love, possessive, touch-her-and-die side of him. It’s just as swoon worthy and powerful….. I just love the darkness.
Once they are slammed back into each other’s lives, they fight for their happiness. Lachlan is an unstoppable force and will do anything for Lyla and her safety and happiness. I love their love and obsession with each other. You might say I’m obsessed with their obsession.
The way Claire weaves suspense into romance is always done so seamlessly. We get to experience such a huge range of emotions in this story. I absolutely adored this book. ANDDDD DID I MENTION HOW HOT THIS BOOK IS?? I mean they are FIRE together. And the need for that eye contact?!! Whew.
I reviewed this book in audio as well as eArc, so I want to provide some details on the audio. I am a huge fan of Joe Arden already. I listen to a lot of romance audios that have him as a narrator. I knew he was going to be AMAZING for Lachlan! And he was. But I was not really vibing with Kasha Kensington as Lyla. It didn’t feel like the voice matched the character, and the tone changes felt so weird to me. Half the time her voice changed and sounded like she had smoked a pack of cigarettes. The inflections on words were strange. It was a little harder for me to listen to her parts. I am glad this was dual narration so that there was a balance. So I definitely prefer the book over audio on this one.
Either way, whether you read or listen to this, all I care about is that you read it!! I love it so much and if you are a lover of sports romance or romantic suspense (or both!) then get a copy ASAP!!
