Wings of silver. Wings of blue. Mortal heart. Broken dreams. Shatter. Shatter. Shatter. A sundering. A grave. I see the end. I see. . .
The world is in chaos as the power surge of the Cascade rises to a devastating crescendo. In furiously resisting its attempts to turn Elena into a vessel for Raphael’s power, Elena and her archangel are irrevocably changed. . .far beyond the prophecy of a cursed Ancient.
At the same time, violent and eerie events around the world threaten to wipe out entire populations. And in the Archangel Lijuan’s former territory, an unnatural fog weaves through the land, leaving only a bone-chilling silence in its wake. Soon it becomes clear that even the archangels are not immune to this deadly evil. This time, even the combined power of the Cadre may not be enough. . .
This war could end them all.
I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
This is so hard to write.
Why?
Because this book is perfect!
And if I elaborate on its perfection, I’ll spoil it. And this is one book you don’t want spoilt. Fans of the Guild Hunter series, your loyalty, your love of this series, your love of these characters will be rewarded. This is what we’ve been waiting for.
I really want to be able to unread this book and read for the first time again, it’s one of those stories that captures you from the start and you basically devour it. I have already done my re-read at a slower pace to pick up on the smaller details I missed the first time. If you’re familiar with this author’s work you know to keep an eye out for all the little details. I enjoy spotting little tidbits that pop up along the way that might be a throw back to other books in the series.
My love of Elena and her Archangel, Raphael, has grown from book to book, and this story just confirms I was right to stay with them; I just adore how badass they are and how they love each other, it seems so real and tangible, the connection sizzles and leaps off the page. And as for the rest of the characters, seeing them is a bit like being reunited with friends you haven’t seen for awhile but are near and dear to you. I find myself often daydreaming that the Guild Hunter universe is real and I’m a part of it (dream big or go home, right?! heh.)
Nalini Singh, the master story builder, weaves together everything with perfection and precision. I’m always in awe of how she brings things everything together so effortlessly, how her ability to execute a plot point she might have touched upon three books earlier and then make it grow, evolve, and then explode off the page is just incredible – I was stunned when I read an interview where she announced herself a writing “pantser”, which basically means she doesn’t plan (apart from the overarching themes of her series), she just writes and it all comes together – and this book is a testament to her abilities to intertwine so many elements together into a compelling, flawless story. And let’s not forget how brilliant she is at bringing life to words, to the extent you feel like you’ve been transported to another place and are actually there watching the action happen; ‘Archangel’s War’ is no exception to her gorgeous writing style.
I will apologise to you now that I don’t touch on any specific details from the book because of spoilers, spoilers, spoilers. But trust me, you want to discover what happens on your own. And for fans of this series, fans of this author, fans of this genre, this book is a must read! You do not want to miss this one out. It has shot up to be one of my favourite and top reads of the year.
Newbies to Paranormal or to Nalini Singh, this series needs to be added to your list. I recommend starting at the beginning, ‘Angel’s Blood’. Nalini has an ability to draw you into her books and not weigh you down with too much world-building that can compromise plot and pacing. You’ll be invested very quickly, fall for the array of diverse, sexy, (sometimes) funny, badass characters, and get locked in for the long haul, which won’t feel long once you get to this amazing book.
And for those of you out there, who, like me have been with Elena from the very beginning with her first encounter with a scary, gorgeous Archangel on the roof of the Tower in New York. This story is everything we’ve been waiting for and more. AND . . . it’s not the end of the Guild Hunter universe, three more books have already been green lit, so more to come.
