This island alone boasts more ghost stories than all of Louisiana combined.
And I’m one of them.In the Louisiana swamplands, ghost stories are as much a part of childhood as chasing fireflies and crawfishing. They never much scared me, though, nor the possibility of evil out to do me harm. Until the night I watched shadows come to life and butcher everything I loved.
With a stranger’s help, I managed to escape to an isolated place miles north, and, in time, became my own ghost story. A cautionary tale for the locals.
Nearly a decade passed, before I returned to my birthplace, in hopes of unearthing long-awaited answers. Instead, I found something I wasn’t looking for. Someone. A remedy for my loneliness.
Or so I thought.
Turns out, Thierry Bergeron is no elixir. He’s a deadly poison, cursed by the demons of his past, and feared by those who call him the elusive Rougarou of the bayou. A devious rogue, whose seductive whispers and rough hands haunt my dreams. The big bad wolf that defiles me without apology, or remorse.
I should resist him, but I can’t.
And when the shadows return to stake their claim on me, his darkness is the only safe place to hide.
I received this book for free from Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
It’s my opinion that nobody does a gothic romance like Keri Lake.
The plots are wildly detailed and the twists and turns always catch me off guard. Most of my reading notes are just, “OMG”.
The ah ha moments in her novels always blow my mind because I just never see them coming. She’s a master at gothic/dark romance.
Her novels are always captivating and an enjoyable read.
Even though you think you know how the story will end, you have absolutely no ideahow Keri is going to get you there. That’s the joy of her writing.
Keri Lake is a phenomenal writer. Reading one of her books is like watching a movie play out in your head. They are perfection. She has quickly become one of my favorite authors and I could not believe my luck when I was able to get my hands on an ARC copy of her latest novel, The Isle of Sin and Shadows. FO REAL, I am such a fan girl its embarrassing.
If you were undecided about this read.
DO NOT BE.
The Isle of Sin and Shadows is a masterpiece and it was amazing. It blew my ever loving mind.
This book has got a whole lot going on; Voodoo, bayou folklore and practices of the occult. An unsolved grisly murder, the cartel, missing persons cases, a true anti-hero and a dark romance.
The thing about Keri Lake’s bad guys, is that they aren’t just evil. They’re devious and layered and oh so well thought out. Nothing is ever as it seems. She writes true anti heroes, even her heroes and heroines are incredibly and darkly flawed. Because of these multifaceted characters, the plot never just takes you from point A to point B. PLOT TWISTS GALORE!
The dual POVs that we are treated to in The Isle of Sin and Shadows are fantastic as well. It makes the plot make so much more intimate, and tragic.
I can not sing Keri Lake’s praises enough, this book was perfection.
I give it 10/5 stars.

Emily is a coffee loving, cat snuggling, hairstylist and book-a-holic.
Having always been a voracious reader and devouring books at a breakneck speed, joining the bookish and blogging community seemed like a natural next step. She loves giving recommendations to friends and family and then very gently (and not forcefully at all) asking for their opinions after they complete each chapter.
Her reviews tend to be goofy, a little sweary, on the more impassioned side and maybe sometimes a little self deprecating.
Emily typically enjoys reading almost every genre, including (but not limited to) monster romance, literary fiction, rom-com, contemporary, LGBTQ+, low/urban fantasy, paranormal, dystopian, sci-fi, gothic romance or basically any book that will make her cry.
